Some Interesting Ideas On Teaching Children To Speak Spanish

For those of you unfamiliar with Yahoo Answers, it is a free service offered by Yahoo that allows people to post all kids of questions to be answered by other people just like you.

I am absolutely addicted to it, and use it all the time. It's a great way to get opinions and helpful information. Keep in mind that there are some rather ridiculous answers posted from time to time (teenagers, I am assuming!), but for the most part I have found it a nifty little wealth of information and assistance.

So, why am a talking about this today? Because I noticed a question posted by a couple about the best way to ensure that their children grow up fluent in both English and Spanish. I thought that several of the answers were worth sharing with you.

Since I am not really sure if I am allowed to re-post content from Yahoo, I will just give you a link to read the question & answers over at Yahoo Answers:

What Makes Rocket Spanish Perfect For Teaching Children To Speak Spanish? MegaSpanish!

There are lots of great language programs out there, but if you are teaching children to speak Spanish, then Rocket Spanish is the way to go.

That is because it has something that other programs don't: MegaSpanish, an amazing help-you-learn software that is easy to use and very kid-friendly.

MegaSpanish consists of two programs, MegaVocab and MegaAudio that are incredibly effective teaching tools. Both are basically interactive games that really make learning Spanish fun for children.

MegaVocab is an easy-to-use word recall game with over 2,000 words and over 20 topics. There are corresponding pictures that are especially helpful for younger children. You can even and your own extra words and pictures. (This feature is extremely helpful for adults as well--think business and industry terms you might need to learn for an international meeting or job interview!)

It is so easy to use. You practice vocabulary from any of the chapters from either the Beginners or Advanced Grammar Books. There are also 23 specialized topics to choose from as well, including “Family,” “The Classroom,” “The Weather,” and more.

When you have selected what you want to be tested on, you are shown a picture and the English word. Just select the corresponding Spanish word from the 4 options given. If you get it right first time, then you get the maximum points. You can continue guessing, with one less point for every incorrect answer, until you get the right answer.

MegaAudio is very similar. You select the topics that you wish to be tested on. Once you have selected your topic, you are shown 6 different pictures with the English word for the picture underneath. The audio track will play the Spanish equivalent and you have to select the correct picture. You get 6 points for a correct answer and lose one point for every incorrect answer.

My children absolutely love this program. To them, it's a computer game that is fun to play. There is no more pouting and whining about boring lessons and being forced "to do more homework." Now my kids are constantly on the computer "playing the Spanish game."

And they have really learned to speak Spanish! I am absolutely amazed at how much they have learned in just a few months with Rocket Spanish. I took Spanish for years in high school and college, and my kids are already talking circles around me.

But don't take my word for it. Try it for yourself and see how effective it is--and how much your kids end up loving it. (FYI--just be prepared for your children to take over your computer!)

Last year, I decided that I should really try to find a way to teach my children (7 and 10 years old) Spanish while they were still young enough to absorb and retain it. I did a lot of research and tried several different programs. Some were OK, some were useless, and a few were pretty good.

But Rocket Spanish was by far the best, and was the undisputed winner with my kids.
